MONUMENT
Monument is a performance ritual honoring the strength and diversity of women across the African diaspora, in honor of International Women’s Day 2013. The site-specific performance begins on the museum’s lower level and over the course of an hour spirals upward through the space, culminating with a final tableau in the museum’s external gardens. The audience moves to different floors in order to experience this journey of poetry, song, movement and visual spectacle. In addition to featured collaborators cellist Élise Cuffy, dancer Chanon Judson and vocalist/composer Imani Uzuri, the work includes quotes gathered by Holly Bass from contemporary women artists from Africa, Europe and the Americas.
